Minority representation is difficult to define because who the ‘minority’ consists of differs in every country. Over all, if we stick to the definition written in the dictionary , minority representation would mean the description or portrayal of a group with a number that forms less than half of the larger group. Nevertheless there isn’t a universal minority. For instance in the United States Hispanics are the splinter group .
Only 16.3 percent of the American population is Hispanic or Latino. While in Colombia Hispanics are the biggest group of the population, Finland, a country with an estimated population of 5.5 million, has earned a spot in the list of countries without coloured people. Besides having multiple minority groups it is illegal to gather information on ethnicity, national identity and religion which makes determining the minority even harder. However if we have to chose a “minority” it would be all the people not prominently reflected in the mainstream media.
Children, the most vulnerable and inexperienced society group, are becoming younger and younger when they are confronted with a screen for the first time. Parents even place their babies in front of the television nowadays. Many adolescents watch R-rated movies with or without parental permission and overall have a high average screen time.
Film industries make a lot of profit on children and aren’t careful enough with the content of their productions. The world is becoming more and more diverse every day however the growth is not reviewed in the modern movie culture. On screen under-represented actors from racially diverse backgrounds are often casted stereotypically. Minority representation in modern movie culture is of interest as films are a medium of entertainment that are prevalent across the world. All viewers no matter the nationality obtain their perspective about other races from these films. The standard and basis for how we view each other is created by it.
